We are looking for volunteers who would like to staff a Heifer booth at this event. This should be a fun, insightful event full of organizations who demonstrate workable solutions and models of sustainability and enable people to take action for change in practical ways.

The time slots we are looking to fill are as follows:

Saturday May 13
Slot One: 11 AM to 4 PM
Slot Two: 4 PM to 7:30 PM

Sunday May 14
Slot Three: 11 AM to 2:30 PM
Slot Four: 4 PM to 6:30 PM

Bay Area Earth Day Celebrations- April 22

What better day to share Heifer's stories and successes with the people of the Bay Area than on Earth Day? Earth Day falls on Saturday, April 22nd and will be marked by a number of celebrations throughout the region. We need your help in identifying these events so we can be a part of them (info booths, seminars, etc.).

For those of you living in and around Alameda County, there's a celebration scheduled that Saturday from 11am-4pm in Washington Park (740 Central Avenue, Alameda, CA) that we could surely have a booth at. Opportunities for Educators

In line with HeiferÂs belief that education at home plays a significant role in our overall mission to eradicate global hunger and poverty, we have developed two exciting opportunities for educators this year. Please forward this information on to any individuals whom you think may have an interest in the following programs.

Heifer University for Educators, Heifer Ranch, Perryville, AR: April 6-9 & August 3-6

Heifer International is offering a special session of Heifer University focusing on HeiferÂs School Programs. This special program is being developed for teachers, librarians, school administrators and others who are interested in knowing more about HeiferÂs educational outreach. Special attention will be given to the Read-to-Feed and GET IT programs as well as new educational initiatives. Scholarships are available to cover all on-site expenses.

The program focus will consist of: exploring HeiferÂs educational mission and goals, new directions for HeiferÂs educational programs, opportunities for professional growth and development, the exploration of global topics (world food systems, globalization, conflict resolution, reliefDevelopmentpment, etc) and sharing of best practices.

CEU Credits will be offered to all program participants.

Study Tour for Educators 2006, Honduras: June 29-July 8, 2006

Heifer International's Community Education team is excited to offer a special Study Tour opportunity created specifically for educators. The trip will be in the summer of 2006 to visit Heifer programs in Honduras, Central America.

Teachers, administrators, and other educators and volunteers are invited to apply for a grant from Heifer which would include: international air transportation; land transportation in country; accommodations and meals; Heifer project visits and resource materials.

The Study Tour will provide teachers who participate in Read to Feed, GET IT, and other community education programs with an opportunity to learn more about Heifer International, issues associated with the root causes of hunger, poverty and environmental degradation, and how their actions as educators help to alleviate these problems. Also, by visiting Heifer project sites and partners, participants get to see firsthand how Heifer's approach to development really works.

The Study Tour for Educators is intended to develop advocates who will take up the cause of sustainable development by speaking out and educating others. Participants in the Study Tour for educators will be expected to take part in educational activities during the trip, and, after they return home, to make presentations about Heifer. Heifer's Community Education staff will lead the 7 to 9 day tour.

Welcome to Heifer International's Bay Area Volunteer Blog!

Welcome everyone! I hope logging in wasn't too difficult. Well here's our first crack at developing a means for us all to communicate with each other and share our ideas for how we can educate the Bay Area about the good work of Heifer International and what role we all can play in the overall mission to eradicate global hunger and poverty. Please feel free to use this blog for anything related to Heifer. If you know of an event in your area that we should be at-post it! If you have seen a good movie related to Heifer's work-post it! If you're looking to start up a project at a school or with a civic club and you have questions-post it! I think you get the picture.

You'll notice the calendar link on the right hand side; I will update this on a regular basis so it will contain all events we have scheduled for the Bay Area and surrounding areas. Feel free to add your events as well.

If you're looking to post something right now, please let us know what you see as some potential next steps for the group. What kind of training would you like? What kind of events would you like to work on? What kind of information do you feel you need to better represent Heifer in your community?
